İZMİR WILDLIFE PARK
İzmir Wildlife Park is ideal for an occasional visit and a breath of fresh air. We first came here around five years before writing this post, not long after the park opened, and what stayed in my memory was how empty, peaceful, enormous and green it was. It was still green this time, but the car park was packed. You know how the tiny house you lived in as a child seems huge in your memory? Apparently, I had done the same with this park. If you are wondering whether I was raised here by bears and that is why I remember it this way, of course not. Despite being an architect, I have always struggled with scale and directions; our safari-focused trip to Kenya earlier that year may also have changed my perspective. During this visit, I felt sorry for the animals because their enclosures seemed very small to me. At the same time, I felt happy for myself as I walked through nature in my favourite kind of weather—cool and sunny. Opened by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality on 30 November 2008, the park has become a valuable public space for people living in the city. Given İzmir's high concrete-to-greenery ratio, a visit here quickly reminds you just how much people need places like this. It had clearly become a firm favourite with local residents, and anyone with a car seemed to be heading there. This also means you can observe small children in their natural habitat: many are amazed by the animals' behaviour—how is the poor child supposed to know what a python is?
The park is home to birds, rodents, horses and species found on the African savannah. As I mentioned earlier, however, their enclosures were very small, and the elephant in particular looked deeply unhappy. Their living conditions are far better than they were at the former Kültürpark Zoo, but it is still difficult not to feel uneasy. Admission prices for 2026 are 100 TL for adults and 50 TL for students; children aged 0–6 enter free. Payment is accepted only by contactless bank card or İzmirim Kart, and no physical tickets are sold. The park is closed on Mondays and is currently open from 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and from 09:00 to 18:00 at weekends. There are cafés inside, and naturally the municipality knows no limits when it comes to flavour =). The park gets very crowded at weekends, so visit on a weekday if you can. Prices and opening hours were checked in August 2026.
