SAINT TROPEZ

It is hard to imagine anyone who has not heard of St Tropez. Our parents — probably our fathers more than our mothers :) — know this remarkable summer town from Brigitte Bardot’s classic film And God Created Woman, while the generations who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s may know it from Cem Uzan’s holidays and Televole, one of the landmarks of Turkish television. We knew St Tropez mostly through those references too, and although we spent barely half a day there, we could not resist sharing it with you :)

HOW TO GET TO SAINT TROPEZ

The answer depends entirely on the size of your budget. Cem Uzan arrives here by superyacht, while Demet Akalın and Önder Bekensir arrive by helicopter. Assuming you are an ordinary traveller, we wanted to list the other options too. Although the towns along this coast are generally connected by train, unfortunately there is no direct train to St Tropez. At best, you can travel by train as far as Saint-Raphaël, then continue by bus or boat. When we researched it, we found that Lignes d’Azur buses from Cannes and Nice cost €1.50. In fact, Cannes yazısında as we explained in our Cannes article, a ten-ticket bundle can bring the cost of getting here down to just €1. You can also take the morning boats from Nice. In the end, we drove here in a car we rented in Cannes. On the way, we stopped for breakfast in Fréjus, a charming little town. We liked it because it was not a tourist trap in the Nice–Cannes–Monaco triangle. The bakery owner, clearly unused to seeing tourists, did not know what to do when she saw us, but we managed with our French seasoned with Spanish and English. After a classic French breakfast, we continued on and found ourselves in Saint Tropez an hour later. We parked in the marina car park and set off to explore.

THINGS TO DO IN SAINT TROPEZ

There is a lovely waterfront here, and almost everything revolves around it and the small streets behind it. You can walk along the shore, have coffee in cafés overlooking the marina, or ask street artists to draw your portrait. Walk to the end of the marina and you can look over the whole town from the viewing terrace on the wall separating the sea from the city, with the deep-blue water behind you for wonderful photographs.

One café here is especially famous: Senequier, recognisable from 100 metres away by its vivid red chairs and awnings. We chose only to take a photo in front of it, but it could be a good place to rest if you are tired. Of course, if you are staying here or have more time, there are plenty of other things to do.

You can visit the markets held on Tuesdays and Saturdays, climb up to the hilltop citadel, explore the Musée de l’Annonciade, known especially for its modern-art collection, or visit the museum of Louis de Funès’s cult film, much loved in Turkey, Jandarma St. Tropez'deor enjoy the nightlife.

WHAT TO BUY IN SAINT TROPEZ

Let me start with what not to buy: a map! The tourist office wanted €6 for an animated map printed on an A4 sheet, so we photographed it and ran away :) If you really think you need a map — we did not — download an online map instead. As for souvenirs, the most distinctive ones here are naturally cinema-related. Gift shops all over town sell trays, calendars, and T-shirts bearing Brigitte Bardot’s image. Magnets from The Gendarme of Saint-Tropez and wine featuring its leading actor, Louis de Funès, are other options.

WHAT TO EAT IN SAINT TROPEZ

Seafood, available all along the coast, is also the star of the restaurants here. You may also find a few Italian restaurants nearby. But the one thing you should not leave without trying is the town’s namesake dessert, La Tarte Tropézienne, said to have been named by Brigitte Bardot during the filming of And God Created Woman. Similar to what we call German cake, this tart has a light, wonderful cream inside soft white pastry. It costs €10–14 in cafés, but a very large slice from the patisserie that invented it, Micka’s Patisserie, costs €3.50. As we did, buy a coffee in a cup from a beach kiosk and eat it on a bench facing the magnificent marina. Enjoy — and if you post the funny photos of yourself trying to eat it Instagram on Instagram, do not forget to tag us; it is a little difficult to eat :)

WHERE TO STAY IN SAINT TROPEZ

Saint Tropez hotels, are quite expensive, especially in summer. There are options for different budgets, but hotels with sea views can hurt the wallet. The international jet set arrive here on their yachts, of course. Saint Tropez’s beaches are actually a little outside the town centre, so there are also hotels overlooking beautiful beaches three or four kilometres from the centre.
