Santorini and Mykonos are two of the best-known islands in Greece's Cyclades, but they offer different experiences. Santorini is the stronger choice for caldera views, volcanic landscapes and a romantic itinerary; Mykonos is better known for beaches, nightlife and easy access to ancient Delos.
SANTORINI
Santorini—also called Thera—was shaped by volcanic activity. Fira and Oia sit along the caldera rim, while the island's beaches range from dark volcanic sand to dramatic red cliffs. Beyond the famous sunset viewpoints, look for Akrotiri, Pyrgos and local products such as tomatoes, fava and volcanic-soil wines.

MYKONOS
Mykonos combines lively beach areas with a compact Cycladic capital. In Mykonos Town, the classic route includes the whitewashed lanes, Little Venice and the windmills. Boats also connect the island with Delos, one of Greece's most important archaeological sites; operating days depend on weather and season.

WHICH ISLAND SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Choose Santorini for caldera scenery, volcanic geology, wine and a slower couple's itinerary. Choose Mykonos for nightlife, beach clubs, shopping and a Delos day trip. If time and budget allow, combine them by ferry—but leave flexibility because Aegean winds can disrupt sailings.
GETTING THERE AND AROUND
Both islands have airports with domestic and seasonal international flights. Ferries connect them with Athens and other Cycladic islands, but timetables vary considerably outside summer. Book accommodation with the exact location in mind: steep paths and stairs are common in Santorini, while beaches in Mykonos are spread around the island.
WHEN TO VISIT
July and August bring the largest crowds, highest prices and hottest weather. Late spring and early autumn are often more comfortable, although some seasonal businesses and ferry routes operate less frequently outside peak summer. Always verify transport for your exact dates before booking non-refundable stays.
