Taking Your Car Abroad from Turkey
As we mentioned in our earlier Samos articles , we decided to take our car because we would be staying on Samos for a long time and the island has several centres separated by considerable distances. Our research showed that taking a Turkish-registered car abroad is manageable, but requirements vary by destination and can change. The notes below have therefore been updated for 2026; always check the destination country's official rules, the border authority and your ferry or transport operator before departure.
The main points to prepare are:
Your vehicle's compulsory traffic insurance must be valid. For countries in the Green Card system, you may also need an international Green Card motor insurance certificate. The Turkish Touring and Automobile Association (Turing) issues it through its authorised offices and online channels. Policies can be issued for periods from 15 days to one year. Our old payment is no longer relevant; check the current official Green Card page. In 2026, Turing lists passenger-car rates from €47.25 for 15 days to €236.25 for one year. Rates and eligible countries can change.
The reflective vest and printed map we received at the time were useful extras, but equipment rules are set by each destination. Depending on the country you may need reflective vests for passengers, a warning triangle, first-aid kit, spare lamps or other items. Check each country on your route rather than assuming one list applies everywhere.

Green Card insurance covers your legal liability for damage caused to third parties; it does not insure damage to your own vehicle. If you want your own car protected abroad, ask your insurer to add the relevant foreign territorial cover to your comprehensive policy and obtain written confirmation.
HOW TO RENEW A TURKISH DRIVING LICENCE
A modern Turkish driving licence is accepted for temporary driving in many destinations, but it is not a universal substitute for an International Driving Permit (IDP). Requirements depend on national law, how long you stay and sometimes the rental company. Check the destination's official rules and carry your physical licence; a digital image is not enough.
If you need to renew or replace a Turkish driving licence, the current process is:
Book an appointment with the Population and Citizenship Affairs directorate through randevu.nvi.gov.tr or ALO 199. Appointment availability varies, so plan ahead.
Typical documents include:
— Your existing driving licence, if available
— A Turkish identity card or passport
— A valid driver's medical report from an authorised health provider
— Proof that the current fees have been paid. The old TL 15 figure in this article is obsolete; in 2026 the official total for renewing an older licence is TL 2,115.
— One biometric photograph meeting the current official standard. Do not rely on an old passport photograph without checking that it complies.
— Your blood-group information or a written declaration. If a record appears incorrect, have it verified by a healthcare professional rather than relying on an old database entry.
At the appointment, officials review the documents and complete the application. Delivery and temporary-document procedures can change; the directorate will tell you how to track the card and what you may use while waiting. Turkish B- and A-class licences are generally valid for ten years, subject to health and category rules.

HOW TO GET AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT
Some countries or rental companies require an IDP in addition to your Turkish licence. We entered Greece through Chios with our Turkish card licence without difficulty, but one journey does not establish the rule for every traveller. Turing's IDP is valid for one year and must be carried together with the underlying national licence. Check both the destination authority and your rental or insurance provider.
— A valid Turkish driving licence with at least one year remaining, according to Turing's current requirements
— An identity document showing your Turkish ID number, such as an identity card or passport
— The current application form and any additional documents requested by Turing— Current biometric photographs in the number and format specified by Turing.
The old TL 446 and TL 245 prices are obsolete. For 2026, Turing lists TL 7,800 for a first IDP issue and TL 4,424.85 for a renewal. Confirm the current amount before applying.

At the port or land border, officers may inspect your passport, licence, vehicle registration, insurance and authorisation to use the vehicle, then examine the car. At Çeşme Port our car went through the truck-mounted X-ray unit shown in the photograph. The process took us a long time, while the next driver's inspection lasted only five minutes. Arrive early and follow the operator's check-in deadline.
Customs records the vehicle's exit and re-entry electronically. You do not normally pay a separate fee simply to have the car recorded, but if the registered owner is absent you may need a notarised or otherwise accepted authorisation. Leased, company-owned or financed vehicles can require additional permission. Confirm all documents with Turkish Customs and the destination authority before travel.
