Chiang Mai is the cultural heart of northern Thailand: an old walled city of temples and markets surrounded by forested mountains. It is easy to explore at a relaxed pace, yet there is enough nearby to fill several days.
BEST THINGS TO DO IN CHIANG MAI
Three Kings Monument and the Old City
Begin around the Three Kings Monument, then walk through the old city to see its moat, gates and temples. Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh are among the best-known stops. Dress modestly and follow the rules posted at active places of worship.
Doi Suthep, Bhubing Palace and Chiang Mai Zoo
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is the classic mountain excursion, with broad views over the city. Bhubing Palace lies farther up the same road and is known for its landscaped gardens; current visitor access should be checked before setting out. Chiang Mai Zoo is also on the mountain road, although animal-welfare standards should be considered when choosing any wildlife attraction.
Night markets
Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is the convenient everyday option for food, clothing and souvenirs. The Sunday Walking Street turns Ratchadamnoen Road into a much larger evening market with crafts and snacks. Arrive early if you prefer a quieter walk.
HOW TO GET TO CHIANG MAI
Chiang Mai International Airport is close to the city. Trains and overnight buses also connect Chiang Mai with Bangkok, but journey times and classes vary. In town, red songthaews, tuk-tuks and app-based taxis are common; agree on a fare before entering a vehicle that is not metered.
WHERE TO STAY IN CHIANG MAI
Stay inside the Old City for temples and walkability, around Nimman for cafés and nightlife, or near the Ping River for a calmer atmosphere. During festivals and Thailand's cooler high season, book early and confirm whether breakfast, airport transfer and cancellation are included.
WHAT TO BUY IN CHIANG MAI
Northern textiles, ceramics, paper products, tea and locally grown coffee make useful souvenirs. For handmade goods, ask where an item was produced and favour shops or market stalls that can explain the maker and materials.
