Koh Samui combines busy resort areas with quieter beaches and small coastal communities. Choosing the right part of the island matters: Chaweng suits travellers who want activity, while Mae Nam and Lipa Noi offer a slower rhythm.
PLACES TO SEE IN KOH SAMUI
Chaweng
Chaweng has the island's largest concentration of restaurants, shops and nightlife. Its long beach is convenient, but the central section can be busy. It is the easiest base for visitors who want everything close at hand.
Mae Nam
Mae Nam feels more relaxed, with a broad beach and a village atmosphere. It is a good compromise for couples and independent travellers who want restaurants nearby without staying in the liveliest resort area.
Lipa Noi
On the west coast, Lipa Noi is known for a quieter shoreline and sunset views. Services are more spread out, so it suits travellers who plan to rent a vehicle or spend most of their time at their accommodation.
Other popular stops include Fisherman's Village in Bophut, Wat Plai Laem and the Big Buddha area. Visit temples respectfully, cover shoulders and knees, and avoid climbing on religious structures for photographs.
WHAT TO EAT IN KOH SAMUI
Try southern Thai curries, grilled seafood, tropical fruit and coconut-based desserts. Night markets are useful for tasting several dishes in one evening. Choose busy stalls where food is cooked to order, and ask the price before selecting seafood sold by weight.
WHERE TO STAY IN KOH SAMUI
Choose Chaweng for nightlife and convenience, Bophut for restaurants and an evening promenade, Mae Nam for a quieter beach holiday, or Lipa Noi for sunsets and seclusion. Check the exact map location: two properties described as being in the same beach area can be several kilometres apart.
GETTING AROUND KOH SAMUI
Shared songthaews, taxis, hotel transfers and rental vehicles are available. If renting a scooter, use a proper helmet, carry the required licence and insurance, and do not underestimate steep or wet roads. For ferries, confirm the departure pier because Koh Samui has several terminals.
