Phuket is Thailand's largest island and one of the country's easiest beach destinations to reach. It offers much more than resort life: colourful Sino-Portuguese streets, viewpoints, local food and day trips across the Andaman Sea.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN PHUKET

Phuket Old Town

Walk around Thalang Road and the surrounding streets for historic shophouses, cafés, shrines and street art. The old town gives a very different impression from the beach resorts and is especially pleasant in the morning or late afternoon.

Viewpoints

Karon Viewpoint—also called Three Bays Viewpoint—looks across Kata Noi, Kata and Karon. Promthep Cape is another popular sunset stop. Traffic builds before sunset, so allow extra time.

Boat trips

Common excursions include Phi Phi and Maya Bay, Phang Nga Bay and the so-called James Bond Island. Protected areas may limit swimming, landing or visitor numbers. Choose a licensed company with clear safety equipment and avoid tours that chase or feed wildlife.

PHUKET BEACHES

Karon has a long, open shoreline; Kata is compact and popular with families and surfers in season; Patong is the busiest choice for nightlife; and northern beaches such as Mai Khao generally feel quieter. Paradise and Tri Trang are smaller alternatives near Patong, but access and facilities can change.

WHERE TO STAY IN PHUKET

Stay in Patong for nightlife, Kata or Karon for a balanced beach holiday, Phuket Town for culture and food, or the north for a quieter resort stay. Phuket is large, so compare the accommodation location with the places you actually plan to visit.

HOW TO GET TO PHUKET

Phuket International Airport has domestic and international connections. Long-distance buses link the island with mainland Thailand, and ferries or speedboats connect selected islands and coastal towns. Times depend on season and sea conditions.

GETTING AROUND PHUKET

Airport buses, local buses, taxis, app-based cars and rental vehicles are available. Agree on fares when necessary and allow generous time for traffic. Scooter accidents are common: rent only with the correct licence, insurance and a quality helmet.
